CNN —The world has passed a clean energy milestone, as a boom in wind and solar meant a record-breaking 30% of the world’s electricity was produced by renewables last year, new data shows. The planet is reaching “a crucial turning point” toward clean energy, according to the Global Electricity Review published Wednesday by climate think tank Ember. Record-breaking renewablesIn 2000, renewables made up less than 19% of the global energy mix. It made up nearly twice as much new electricity generation as coal last year. Electricity demand is set to soar from 2024 onward, Ember’s analysis found.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s first criminal trial begins on Monday, April 15, with jury selection and is expected to take six to eight weeks for the whole process from start to finish. This trial, related to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016, is the first of four ongoing criminal cases that are expected to head to trial for the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee. CNN —Same-sex unions are now legal in 35 countries and parts of Mexico after Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to establish marriage equality for all. While Mexico does not have a national law on same-sex marriage, more than half of its states regulate, allow, and recognize it. Here are the countries where same-sex marriage is legal:Since 2001, when the Netherlands became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage, there have been ramped-up efforts worldwide to pass similar legislation. Taiwan, for instance, became the first Asian country to make same-sex marriage a reality in 2019. Marriage equality is still, however, largely limited to countries in the Americas, Europe and Oceania.
